The European Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the Government of the Balearic Islands
The European Prosecutor’s Office is conducting an investigation to determine whether the actions of the government of the Balearic Islands, under the control of the popular party, had any implication in the non-claim for reimbursement of the defective masks provided by the plot of Koldo García . This action by the prosecution derives from the complaint presented by the PSOE against the government of Marga Prohens, accusing them of allowing the claim of 2.6 million euros to the company Soluciones de Gestión to expire. The Socialists denounced Javier Ureña, current director general of the Regional Health Service, for alleged crimes of embezzlement, embezzlement and influence peddling in relation to the claim of 2.6 million euros of the 3.7 million paid for almost 1 .5 million masks (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).
Origin and Expiration of the Claim
The case goes back to the first months of the covid pandemic in 2020, when the Balearic government, under the leadership of Francina Armengol, acquired masks from the company Soluciones de Gestión for 1.4 million euros. This material did not meet the quality standards required for health use, as certified by the Department of Health. This resulted in the masks remaining in storage and never being used. The company had been recommended to the Balearic Islands by Koldo García, principal advisor to the then Minister of Transport, José Luis Ábalos. In the spring of 2023, the Health Service initiated the claim of 2.6 million euros to the company, which expired in January 2024. The current government, under the presidency of Marga Prohens (PP), has argued that the previous regional executive never informed them of the overpriced masks or formally initiated the claim to the investigated company (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/) .
Research Revelations
The investigation into the case has disproved the position of the PP, since the Civil Guard recorded conversations between those involved in which arrangements were made for the claim file to expire. This evidence includes the transcript of a conversation between the company’s managers, where it was suggested that the Balearic Islands would not continue with the claim of the masks. A day later, the file expired. According to the Palma court, the European Prosecutor’s Office has already started an investigation into the acquisition of these masks and is also competent to investigate the subsequent claim of the price of the masks (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de -texts-in-Catalan/).
