Job insecurity in the hospitality industry continues to increase

Complaint from the Federation of Services

At the height of the tourist season, the Federation of Workers’ Commission Services calls attention to the growing job insecurity that affects workers in the hospitality industry. The union warns that a significant number of seasonal professionals, usually active during the summer months, have not been able to accept work due to the rise in housing prices and basic expenses, a circumstance that some companies take advantage of to avoid their legal duties and the conditions established in the applicable collective agreement.

Bad management and labor abuses

Faced with this situation, the Workers’ Commissions indicate that the templates have been reduced to the essential minimum, which generates an unsustainable overload. They mention an increase in working days that are often not compensated in any way, as well as a lack of respect for weekly rest days and rest time between shifts. This makes an effective reconciliation between work and personal life impossible, and results in a series of abuses that constantly affect workers.

Increase in occupational accidents

Labor Commissions predicts that, as the weeks progress, there will be a noticeable increase in work accidents and sick leave due to common illnesses. This trend is a direct consequence of the extreme pressure to which workers are subjected, which endangers their health and well-being.

An unsustainable model

For its part, the trade union points out that the current tourism model is unsustainable for most professionals in the sector. Working conditions, far from improving, have deteriorated, and families, affected by uncontrolled inflation, find it increasingly difficult to meet daily expenses, no matter how hard they work. Despite the record results of the tourism sector, which includes a remarkable job creation and an increase in the profits of the companies, these improvements do not have an impact on the living and working conditions of the workers.
