Junts per Catalunya demands a strong response to the possible arrest of Puigdemont

A call to democratic unity

Albert Batet, leader of the Junts per Catalunya parliamentary group, has urged all democratic forces to take a firm position against what he describes as the ‘rebellion’ of the Supreme Court. This demand arises in the context of the imminent possibility that Carles Puigdemont, president in exile, will be arrested on his return to Catalonia, despite the existence of the Amnesty Law.

A debate marked by amnesty

During the press conference that followed his meeting with the President of the Parliament, Josep Rull, Batet stressed that if Puigdemont was arrested, Junts per Catalunya would request the suspension of the investiture plenary of the new President of the Generalitat, Salvador Island ‘Our general secretary has been very clear in this aspect’, said Batet, referring to the words of Jordi Turull.

The importance of the Amnesty Law

Batet expressed his indignation at the fact that the judges of the Supreme Court do not apply a law that has been democratically approved. ‘This is a situation that should concern all citizens, regardless of their political position’, he added.

Junts’ position as opposition

Batet expressed his intention to lead the opposition, emphasizing that Junts per Catalunya will position itself as the first opposition force without any ties to the Spanish parties. ‘We will not agree with a PSC that, under the direction of Illa, ignores the needs of a significant part of Catalonia’, he stressed.

Defending the interests of Catalonia

The president of the parliamentary group stated that they will represent the national interests of Catalonia, prioritizing the needs of the citizens over those of any political party. ‘We want a president who defends Catalonia against state interests’, he said, highlighting the importance of confronting issues such as education, health and climate change with adequate resources.

Criticism of the new government

In relation to the pact between PSC, ERC and Commons to invest Illa, Batet described it as the result of ‘partisan needs’. He expressed his concern about the lack of courage of ERC in the face of the possibility of new elections with Puigdemont again in Catalonia. ‘Catalonia needs a government that faces the great challenges with responsibility and not as a circumstantial agreement’, he warned.

Together’s commitment to Catalonia

Batet concluded that, as an independent political force, Junts per Catalunya assumes the responsibility of leading the alternative that Catalonia needs to face its future. ‘Our mission will be to strengthen the centrality of our political project to counteract a government that could harm the interests of our nation’, he said.
