An exile between Geneva and Abu Dhabi
Since August 2020, Juan Carlos I, the king emeritus, has been living away from Spain, dividing his main time between Geneva and Abu Dhabi. Although he has expressed his interest in returning permanently to Spain, this possibility does not seem feasible while his son, Felipe VI, and his wife, Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, are on the throne. The public image of Juan Carlos I has been seriously affected by several controversies, which has led many Spaniards to view him with suspicion.
Sporadic visits to his native country
In an effort to maintain a semblance of normality, the king emeritus has made occasional visits to Spain, participating in events such as regatta competitions and family reunions. In 2023, he made up to seven visits to the country. However, his health situation has been a constant concern. Despite his attempts to project an image of strength, the reality is considerably more complicated.
The delicate health of Juan Carlos I
The aftermath of a severely damaged hip from a skiing accident and botched surgery has severely affected his mobility. Today, he relies on a wheelchair to get around and suffers from severe pain that makes his daily activities difficult. At 86 years old, the emeritus king has seen a notable deterioration in his health, aggravated by the passage of time and his medical conditions.
Medical treatments and diagnoses
Despite using a cane to try to maintain some independence, Juan Carlos I visits a renowned clinic monthly in search of innovative treatments to relieve his pain. However, the results of his latest medical check-up have not been encouraging: his bone deterioration is irreversible and he will have to spend the rest of his days in a wheelchair. A recent medical report prepared in Vitoria, after several examinations, has revealed a significant worsening of his health. Although he follows a supervised exercise routine and receives specialized care, his physical decline seems inevitable.
Adapting to a new reality
To face this new stage, Juan Carlos I has organized his life in such a way that his limitations are not an impediment. He has a team of caregivers available 24 hours a day, essential for his daily life, helping him with all his basic needs and daily activities. In addition, he has adapted his residence in Abu Dhabi, installing ramps and other devices that facilitate his mobility. He also spends time in Geneva, where he stays at the Four Roses hotel, which has all the necessary amenities for his daily life.
