Safety and health at work
The union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) has issued a statement reporting that in the first two months of 2024, La Palma has recorded a total of 166 workplace accidents. These incidents have been mainly concentrated in the construction and services sectors, followed closely by industry, agriculture and fishing.
World Day for Safety and Health at Work
On April 28, World Day for Safety and Health at Work is celebrated, a date that is especially relevant for CCOO. On this day, all workers who have lost their lives or have suffered the consequences of work accidents and occupational diseases are remembered. Additionally, it is an opportunity to show support and solidarity towards their families and colleagues.
The climate crisis and its impact on occupational safety and health
CCOO highlights that this year it has focused on the effects of the climate crisis and the risk it represents for safety and health at work. For decades, unions have warned about the need to confront and intensify efforts to combat climate change and the loss of biodiversity. These problems not only affect the environment, but also the economy, society and occupational health.
A call for prevention and quality at work
CCOO points out that it is unacceptable that in 2023 there have been 53,884 workplace accidents in the Canary Islands, which represents an increase of 9.4% compared to the previous year. Of these incidents, 149 were serious or very serious, and 19 resulted in deaths. Many of these accidents could have been prevented, such as falls from height, blows or entrapments. The lack of attention to cardiovascular problems related to working conditions and the quality of prevention in companies is also highlighted.
The union perspective in the face of the climate crisis and occupational health
Given this situation, the Federation of Workers of La Palma of Workers’ Commissions has called the risk prevention delegates in the island’s workplaces to a conference that will take place on April 30 at the union headquarters. of Santa Cruz de La Palma. In this event, the union perspective regarding the climate crisis and occupational health will be addressed.
