Citizen Rally to Stop Construction
The Salvar la Tejita collective has called for a citizen mobilization to demand the suspension of the works on the controversial luxury hotel on the beach of La Tejita, Tenerife. The rally will take place this Thursday at 8:30 a.m. on La Tejita promenade, in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona.
Hunger Strike for Sustainable Tourism
The protest coincides with the indefinite hunger strike initiated by activists from the Canarias se Agota platform. They demand the stoppage of both the hotel project and the Cuna del Alma complex, which includes the construction of luxury tourist homes and other infrastructure in the port of Adeje.
History of Stoppages and Resumptions
The construction of the hotel in La Tejita has suffered several stoppages in recent years. In May 2021, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, together with the Canary Islands Agency for the Protection of the Natural Environment, ordered its suspension due to the invasion of the maritime terrestrial public domain.
However, in February 2023, the Viqueira group, promoter of the hotel, announced the resumption of works based on three rulings from the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands.
The General Directorate of the Coast and the Sea intervenes
In March 2023, the General Directorate of the Coast and the Sea issued a ruling stating that the developer lacks authorization to resume works in the area that became part of the maritime-terrestrial public domain in 2021. The ruling indicates that the rulings favorable to the company do not exempt the need to have a license to build in that area.
Disregard of Stopping Orders
The Salvar la Tejita collective denounces that, despite the stoppage order issued by the General Directorate of Coasts, the works resumed on Tuesday, March 21. The organization claims that it has received an official notification from Costas demanding the suspension of work and that there was no activity on Monday.
However, the group denounces that the backhoes have returned to operate in the area, which they consider to be a disregard for the stoppage orders.
Citizen Mobilization for a Sustainable Future
The citizen rally aims to make visible the opposition to the hotel project and demand a sustainable tourism model for Tenerife. The mobilization is part of the simultaneous demonstrations called on all the islands and in cities outside the archipelago on 20A, against the mass tourism model in the Canary Islands.
Save la Tejita and Canarias se Agota urge citizens to participate in the rally and support their demands for a future that is more respectful of the environment and the natural heritage of the island.
