A tribute to outstanding dance figures
Next Monday marks International Dance Day, and to celebrate it, the mayor of Logroño, Conrado Escobar, along with other members of the municipal corporation and the director of the Casa de la Danza, Perfecto Uriel, have carried out a emotional tree planting ceremony in the Dance Forest.
During the event, the mayor highlighted the importance of this symbolic gesture, which pays tribute to eleven outstanding figures from the world of dance. These trees will become a tangible reminder of the beauty and importance of this art form, turning the forest into a great dictionary of leading figures of dance.
The mayor also expressed his gratitude to the Casa de la Danza de Logroño for its enthusiastic work in promoting this art and for providing opportunities for more people to get involved and enjoy dance as a unique form of expression.
The Dance Forest: a tribute to illustrious people
The Dance Forest is an urban space created in 2009 in La Ribera Park, on Paseo Prior. With more than 120 trees, this natural environment serves as a tribute and reminder to illustrious figures in the art of dance.
Every year, coinciding with the celebration of International Dance Day, a new tree planting takes place in this space. Until now, the trees have been dedicated to recognized figures such as Ana Pavlova, Alicia Alonso, Nijinski, Antonio ‘El Bailarín’, Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn, Mariemma, José Limón, Tamara Rojo, José Carlos Martínez, Laura Hormigón, Óscar Torrado or Lucía Lacarra, among others.
On this occasion, 11 new trees of different species have been planted, such as Ginkgo Biloba, Holm Oak, Swedish Rowan, Araucaria and Siberian Pine. These trees are a tribute to prominent dance artists such as Antonio Gades, Rosario, August Bournonville, Birgit Cullberg, José Neglia, Jean-Gorges Noverre, Rosella Hightower, Héctor Zaraspe, Gerardo Viana, Adeline Genée and Kenneth MacMillan.
International Dance Day
Every April, dance celebrates its International Day around the world to commemorate the birth of Jean-Georges Noverre, creator of modern ballet.
In 1982, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed April 29 as International Dance Day, in recognition of the importance of this art form.
‘Friend of Honor’ Award from the House of Dance
In addition, this afternoon the ‘Friend of Honor’ award will be presented at the new Logroño Bus Station. This recognition is granted every two years by the Casa de la Danza de Logroño to honor and recognize the work of two dance professionals with international recognition.
On this occasion, the winners are Anael Martín, from Havana, Cuba, and Gonzalo Preciado, from Zaragoza, for their outstanding professional work in the world of dance.
