Mahler’s power: a musical journey with the national orchestra

A concert that marked time

On April 12, 2025, the Barcelona Auditorium was the scene of an extraordinary musical event. Although the room was not completely filled, the National Orchestra of Spain offered a memorable interpretation of Symphony no. 6 by Gustav Mahler, known as the ‘tragic’, under the baton of director David Afkham. This performance was part of the Barcelona Opening Festival, an artistic exchange with the OBC that provided an air of renewal in the season.

Afkham and his connection with the orchestra

David Afkham once again demonstrated his deep connection with the National Orchestra, a result of years of collaboration that have enriched both his conducting and the performance of the orchestra. This sixth symphony was considered by many as a achievement higher than the eighth one that previously directed to Madrid, offering a more cohesive and exciting approach.

A journey through emotions

The interpretation of the symphony reflected a deep understanding of the multiple layers of the work. The first movement, with its powerful march, fused the timbre incisivity with a romantic melody that resonated strongly. Afkham opted for a tempo that kept the audience’s attention, creating a dramatic climate that led the auditorium to live the work intensely.

Key moments of interpretation

The symphony was a cluster of culminating moments. The metal section shone with rich sound, while percussion provided a constant presence that raised the work to new levels. The complexity of the last movement was translated into a sound experience that reflected the dramatic magnitude of Mahler.

The balance between technique and expressiveness

Andante offered a moment of serenity, a lyrical pause that contrasted with the previous intensity. Afkham achieved a delicate balance between fluency and expressiveness, allowing each note to resonate with emotion. Its direction made the auditorium immerse themselves in an atmosphere of reflection and nostalgia.

The Complexity of the Scherzo

The Scherzo, with his isoritmias and changes in pulsation, captured the richness of Mahler’s sound language. The transition to the trio offered a moment of calm that contrasted with the immediate dynamic of the movement. Afkham’s direction allowed every sound detail to shine, creating a complete hearing experience.

A detail that deserves reflection

One aspect that attracted the attention was the location of the skeletons in the first movement. Its sound did not achieve the same symbolic effect that is expected in its traditional placement, which provides a spiritual and introspective dimension to the work. This small detail may have been part of the emotional depth that characterizes Mahler’s compositions.

An unforgettable musical experience

As the concert came to an end, attendees were able to perceive the dedication and passion that the musicians had contributed to the stage. Interpretation was not only a technical exercise, but also a true expression of soul that resonated with the audience. Mahler’s music, with his emotional and dramatic complexity, shone with a new light, leaving an indelible imprint on all present.

With a well -elaborate program and the experience of the musicologists who signed it, the concert became a celebration of classical music, which will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the highlights of the season.
