The well-known supermarket chain Mercadona has strengthened its social responsibility this year with an exceptional donation of more than 12,600 tons of food during the first semester. This impressive amount translates into the equivalent of 210,000 shopping carts made on balance.

Mercadona has established alliances with 785 social organizations in both Spain and Portugal, demonstrating a real commitment to alleviate the suffering of the most disadvantaged communities. In Catalonia, its impact is remarkable, with 1,642 tons of food provided through 180 entities.
Beneficiary entities
Among the organizations that have received support are the local food banks of Barcelona, Tarragona, Girona and Lleida, in addition to the Red Cross and other entities that operate in the non-food sector. All these joint efforts have significantly improved the living conditions of many citizens.
Complementary initiatives for a stronger commitment
In addition to food donations, Mercadona has been actively involved in campaigns such as the Gran Recapte and the Primavera Collection. In these initiatives, the company has opted for a monetary contribution to the boxes, an approach that, according to Laura Cruz, Director of Social Action, allows for superior effectiveness and adaptability to real needs.
A comprehensive commitment to society
Mercadona does not limit itself to donating food; its Social Action Plan, in force since 2011, is part of the United Nations Global Compact and seeks to promote the Sustainable Development Goals. One of the outstanding projects is the Trencadís Project, which promotes the employment inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities through the creation of murals in the fish section of stores.
