Initiatives for Children and Animal Welfare
The party MÉS for Mallorca has submitted amendments to the Bill that seeks to modify the current legislation on bullfighting, focusing on the protection of children under 18 years of age. This proposal aims to restrict young people’s access to these shows, highlighting the importance of safeguarding children’s rights.
Criticism of Political Alliances
MÉS representatives have stated that the Popular Party cannot justify its position with the support of extremists. With the recent fracture of the alliances between PP and VOX, MÉS insists that there are no excuses for allowing minors to attend the bullfights, an act they consider harmful to the well-being of young people.
Statements by Marta Carrió
Marta Carrió, deputy of MÉS for Mallorca, has stated forcefully: “Shows that involve the torture of animals are not a place for children. Our responsibility is to protect the youngest.” This stance reaffirms the party’s commitment to the defense of animal and children’s rights.
Conditions of Animals in Bullfighting Shows
MÉS for Mallorca not only seeks to limit the access of minors, but has also proposed measures to improve the conditions of the animals that participate in these festivities. According to his proposal, the animals should arrive at the square at least 48 hours in advance, with the aim of guaranteeing their well-being during their stay.
Necessary Conditions for Animal Welfare
Animals must be housed in appropriate spaces, with access to food and water to avoid any kind of suffering. MÉS for Mallorca emphasizes that the corrals must comply with standards that ensure the physical and emotional health of the animals, avoiding any type of mistreatment.
Support for the Popular Legislative Initiative
In addition to the amendments, MÉS per Mallorca has expressed its support for a Popular Legislative Initiative (ILP) that seeks to abolish Law 18/2013, which currently protects bullfighting. This ILP, which was accepted by the Spanish Congress, wants to return the powers of regulation of these shows to the autonomous communities.
Objectives of the ILP
The main objective of this ILP is to eliminate the state support currently enjoyed by bullfighting, thus allowing the autonomous communities to establish their own regulations to prevent animal abuse. Marta Carrió has reaffirmed the commitment of MÉS for Mallorca to this cause: “We support the ILP to end state protection and return powers to our territory”.
Future of Animal Protection in the Balearic Islands
The ILP is currently collecting signatures until November, an opportunity for citizens to actively participate in the defense of animal rights. MÉS for Mallorca continues to work to guarantee a fairer and more respectful future for all living beings in the Balearic Islands.
