Innovative Mobile Desalination Plants
The Government and the Costa Brava Girona Water Consortium (CACBG) have announced the acquisition of 12 mobile desalination plants, marking a milestone in the search for innovative solutions for water supply in the region. These desalination plants, with an approximate cost of 10 million euros, will be installed in a dozen municipalities starting in June, with the aim of mitigating the effects of the drought that has seriously affected the area.
Production and Coverage
Each of these mobile desalination plants is expected to produce around 1,000 cubic meters of water per day, which will cover approximately 35% of the water demand in the region. It is expected that four desalination plants will be installed in Roses, another four in the DWTP Empuriabrava facilities, and the remaining four on the Empuriabrava beach. The water produced will mainly supply the municipality of Roses, with the surplus destined for other municipalities such as Cadaqués, Llançà, Castelló d’Empúries, and several others.
Impact and Objectives
The Councilor for Climate Action, David Mascort, has highlighted that these mobile desalination plants represent a crucial response to the lack of rainfall and the challenges in water supply in the region. In addition, it seeks to meet the demands of farmers in the Muga basin, who have expressed concern about the salinization of aquifers due to water extraction.
Additional Support
On the other hand, the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, has supported the installation of a floating desalination plant in the Port of Barcelona, as part of the measures to guarantee a sustainable water supply. These actions add to the efforts to implement desalination solutions in different parts of the territory, with the aim of strengthening the water supply in the region.
