Researchers at the University of California in San Diego have presented a revolutionary method to measure blood pressure, which eliminates the need for additional devices. This innovative technique simply uses a smartphone camera, providing an accessible and practical alternative for all.

The functioning of the innovative system

Directed by the Deputy Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Edward Wang, the team has created an application that integrates various components of the telephone, including the camera, the vibration engine and the movement sensor. The process begins when the user exerts pressure with his finger on the screen of a device that vibrates, thus capturing the reduction of this vibration to calculate the applied force.

Through the camera, the application can detect the pulse and identify the exact moment when the applied pressure interrupts the blood flow. From there, an oscilometric calculation is performed that combines the data of the pulse with the force exercised, without the need for previous calibration with external carriages.

Researchers emphasize that, while analog methods depend on dust wave analyzes, which can be influenced by factors such as body posture or blood pressure, the new technique seeks to provide reliable results in a wider range of conditions.

Facilitating use for patients

One of the great challenges that the team faced was to design a tool that patients could use autonomously. For this reason, its application includes real -time guides, ensuring that users can use the system properly, and allow the supervision of a health professional if necessary.

The future of potential method and applications

After optimizing the system, the team plans to launch the application, called ‘vibro’, through the emerging company ‘Billion Labs’. In addition to measuring blood pressure, researchers explore other applications that could include agarri force evaluation or patients’ preparation for surgery.
