Neighborhood concerns in Barcelona: a renewed vision

Insecurity: a persistent fear among neighbors

According to a recent study by the Barcelona Provincial Council, the disturbing feeling of insecurity continues to be the main reason for concern for residents of the demarcation, excluding citizens of the capital. 18.5% of the population expresses this concern, a figure that remains comparable with the data collected between 2020 and 2022, which were 17.7%.

Housing: an issue that is gaining relevance

In a notable change, access to housing has climbed from eighth to third place in the ranking of concerns, with 6.7% of citizens considering it an urgent problem, an increase of 3.1 points. In the city of Barcelona, this problem becomes the second most important, almost tying with the issue of access to apartments.

Other concerns of citizens

Cleaning occupies the second position with 10.4%, while political and municipal management has fallen to fourth place. In addition, immigration has risen to fifth place, with 5.8%, an increase of two points compared to previous data. 92.3% of respondents acknowledge their awareness of the existence of the Provincial Council as a supramunicipal entity.

Regional differences in concerns

The survey, which collected more than 35,000 interviews in more than 300 municipalities, reveals significant variations in concerns depending on the locality. For example, in Hospitalet de Llobregat, almost 41% of citizens consider insecurity as their main problem, followed by incivility and cleanliness, with 11% each.

Badalona: an extreme case

Badalona stands out with an alarming 44% of its population identifying insecurity as their main concern, an increase of eight points compared to the previous year. Cleanliness and political management lag far behind, with only 10% and 9%, respectively.

Trends in Terrassa and other municipalities

In Terrassa, insecurity also ranks first, although with a lower percentage of 23%, a decrease of six points. Cleanliness and immigration remain in second and third place, respectively. In contrast, in Sabadell, cleanliness leads the concerns with 11%, paired with insecurity. Mataró presents a similar situation, with 43% of residents concerned about insecurity, followed by immigration and cleanliness.

Final thoughts on neighborhood concerns

The diversity of concerns among the different municipalities in the Barcelona region reveals a complex picture. Insecurity continues to be a shadow that affects many residents, but other issues, such as housing and cleanliness, also require urgent attention. In a context where citizen awareness is growing, the response of local authorities becomes crucial to address these concerns and restore community trust.
