Network discovered of scams targeting owners of missing pets

Civil Guard investigation exposes fraud on social networks

The Guardia Civil has dismantled a network of scammers who took advantage of owners of lost pets who announced their search through social networks. This operation highlights the importance of being cautious when sharing personal information on the internet and reaffirms the police force’s commitment to the fight against fraud.

Modus operandi of scammers

The investigation, which has involved two suspects, revealed how these criminals operated to defraud owners of lost or stolen pets. Although the main case took place in Malaga, the defendants also face charges in other provinces of Spain. The investigation began in November 2023 after a citizen reported the disappearance of his dog.

Gain the trust of victims

Criminals used information published on social networks to contact owners, offering false clues about the whereabouts of their pets. They took advantage of the victims’ desperation and discomfort to build false trust.

The exchange of money for false information

Although the scammers always asked for money before providing any information, the owners, immersed in desperation to get their pets back, agreed to pay. Scammers tracked various posts and advertisements on social media, searching for people looking for their lost animals, and contacted them claiming to have found their pets.

Details to make the trap more credible

To make their story more believable, scammers offered detailed descriptions of the pets and, in some cases, shared photos of similar animals. Once victims made payment, the scammers cut off all communication, leaving owners penniless and unanswered about the whereabouts of their pets.

Prevention measures suggested by the Civil Guard

To avoid falling into this type of fraud, the Civil Guard has issued several recommendations aimed at owners of missing pets:

– Verify the contact’s identity: If someone claims to have found your pet, ask for evidence such as current photos or a real-time video.

– Do not make advance payments: Avoid transferring money before confirming the veracity of the information provided.

– Use secure communication channels: Opt for secure payment platforms and be wary of those who insist on unconventional payment methods.

– Report suspicious behavior: If you suspect that you could be a victim of a scam, immediately inform the Civil Guard.
