Introduction

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has issued an important statement for all vehicle drivers in Spain. New regulations have been established to advance cyclists, with the aim of improving road safety and protecting this vulnerable group.

Maximum forward speed

One of the main novelties is the limitation of the maximum speed for overtaking a cyclist. According to the new regulations, drivers will not be able to exceed 20 km/h above the road speed limit when overtaking. This means that if the maximum speed allowed is 50 km/h, the car will not be able to overtake the cyclist at more than 70 km/h.

Safety distance

Another important rule is the safety distance that must be maintained when overtaking a cyclist. The DGT requires cars to maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 meters when overtaking. This measure is crucial to prevent accidents and protect the integrity of cyclists.

Prohibition to advance in areas of low visibility

Another prominent rule is the prohibition of overtaking cyclists in areas of low visibility, such as tight curves or grade changes. The DGT insists that drivers must wait for clear and sufficient visibility before overtaking.

Sanctions for non-compliance with the rules

It should be noted that failure to comply with these new rules can result in significant fines. The DGT has warned that the penalties for not respecting the safety distance or the maximum speed when overtaking a cyclist can range between 200 and 500 euros, and in some cases, can lead to the loss of points on the driver’s license.

Tips for overtaking cyclists safely

To avoid fines and, most importantly, protect the lives of cyclists, the DGT offers some practical advice:

Reduce speed

Before moving forward, slow down and make sure you can maintain a safe distance.

It signals progress

Use turn signals to indicate your intention to move forward.

Wait for the right moment

Do not advance in areas of low visibility or in dense traffic situations.

Keep your distance

Always remember to keep at least 1.5 meters distance when moving forward.
