New era of mobility: The Camp de Tarragona tram takes shape

Key approval for the future of transport

The Territorial Urban Planning Commission of Tarragona has given the green light to the definitive approval of the Special Urban Plan for the Camp de Tarragona tram, which will be deployed in its initial phase through Salou, Vila-seca, Cambrils and Vinyols i els Arcs. This decision marks a significant step in the creation of an infrastructure that is expected to be fundamental for the mobility of the second largest metropolitan area in Catalonia, which is home to nearly 325,000 inhabitants.

Design and consensus for better integration

In order to comply with railway legislation, the Department of Urban Planning has developed a plan that not only focuses on land reservation, but also seeks to integrate the tram route with existing urban planning in a coordinated manner with the municipalities involved. This collaboration is essential to ensure that the new transport system meets local needs and improves the quality of life of residents.

Details of the route and its importance

The tram, which will extend over 16.4 kilometres with double track, will follow the old route of the coastal railway line between Cambrils and Salou-Port Aventura. From this station, a new route will be laid out that will allow access to the centre of Vila-seca and will connect with the future Intermodal Station designed by the Ministry of Transport. In addition, a new tram connection is planned between the old Cambrils station and the recently planned Cambrils Nord.

Impact and necessary infrastructure

The approved special urban plan covers an approximate area of 50 hectares, including the tram platform and the essential facilities for its operation. The first phase of the project will have 15 stops, four of which will serve as interchanges with the existing railway stations, thus facilitating intermodality and the connection between different means of transport. This initial phase will require an investment of more than 150 million euros.

A promising future for mobility

With the approval of this plan, Camp de Tarragona is preparing for a significant transformation in its transport infrastructure. The implementation of the tram will not only improve connectivity between municipalities, but will also contribute to environmental sustainability and the reduction of traffic congestion, setting a precedent for future infrastructure projects in the region.
