New Measures for the Increased Regeneration of Water Resources

Expansion of Water Capacity

The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) has announced the tender for the expansion of the l’Escala water regeneration station, with the aim of enhancing water management in the region.

The project, with a budget of 53,700 euros, seeks to increase the treatment capacity of the station, going from the current 250 cubic meters of water to 500, to address the growing needs of the area.

The deadline for submitting proposals ends on April 25, and the selected proposal must detail the actions required to double the capacity.

Efficient Management of Water Resources

The Escala treatment plant, under the management of the Costa Brava Girona Water Consortium, began operating in 2005, providing treatment for waste water from several towns.

With a capacity of 21,000 cubic meters per day, the plant benefits around 105,000 equivalent inhabitants, addressing the need for efficient waste water management.

Resurgence in Drought Context

In light of current challenges, including drought, the ACA promotes the expansion of regeneration treatment to consolidate the use of reclaimed water for non-consumptive purposes.

The expansion of the regeneration station responds to the growing demand, especially during the summer months, when the tourist influx increases, exceeding the capacity of the current infrastructure.

Thus, under this initiative, it is sought to guarantee a sustainable management of water resources, adapting to changes in demand and variable climatic conditions.
