Increase in banking scams
Recently, banking scams have been on the rise, affecting many clients of various entities. One of the most recent has impacted Unicaja clients, who have detected a new type of fraud that puts their savings at risk.
Unicaja clients victims of a new trap
Dozens of people have fallen for the so-called ‘PlayStation scam’, a form of deception that has left many without money and with doubts about the security of their bank accounts.
What is the scam?
This scam, which has affected numerous Unicaja customers, uses phishing techniques to obtain users’ banking details. Scammers use this information to make fraudulent purchases, usually of PlayStation consoles, hence the name of the fraud. Those affected find themselves with unauthorized charges and serious difficulties in recovering their money.
Fraudulent Charge Amounts
Numerous clients have reported charges of between one hundred and two hundred euros in recent months. None of them had bought a PlayStation, which adds to the concern.
Possible causes of bank fraud in Unicaja
Dacio Alonso, president of Unicaja, has addressed the issue and related it to a security vulnerability that arose after the acquisition of Liberbank. While the majority of cases have been reported in Asturias, there is a feared risk of this fraudulent scheme spreading throughout the country.
Since the merger of Unicaja and Liberbank, scam incidents have increased. The entity has been sentenced on several occasions to return funds stolen by criminals.
Recommendations to avoid being a victim of banking scams
To protect yourself from the ‘PlayStation scam’ and other similar scams, it is crucial to follow certain security measures:
