The effects of coffee on health
Doctor Montse Folch, nutritionist at the Teknon Medical Center in Barcelona, highlights in a recent interview the importance of moderating coffee consumption. According to her, drinking more than three caffeinated coffees, teas or soft drinks a day can lead to an increased feeling of hunger, which could affect body weight. ‘My usual breakfast is a coffee accompanied by a yogurt. I recommend limiting intake to a total of three daily drinks,’ he explains.
Studies on excessive coffee consumption
Dr. Folch shares the results of a study she conducted together with Dr. Baselga. In this one, they observed that cancer patients who consumed excessive coffee to stay energized began to lose weight when they reduced their intake. ‘It is important to be aware that, although some people can tolerate more than three coffees without negative effects, in cases of overweight, this can be harmful,’ he says.
Dr. Folch’s personal diet
In his eating routine, Folch prefers salads rich in fiber, combined with proteins such as cheese or ham. ‘Usually my lunch consists of green bean salads with tomato or cheese and pineapple. For a snack, I opt for fruit or yogurt, and for dinner, a light dish like an omelette or a salad,’ he explains. In addition, he recommends consuming white meat and white fish, reserving red meat for special occasions.
Avoid overexposure to beta-carotene
In a conversation about healthy foods, Dr. Folch also commented on the effects of carrots, which are rich in beta-carotene. ‘It is a beneficial antioxidant for the skin, but excessive consumption can lead to an orange tan. It is essential to balance the intake of nutrients, including protein, to maintain a good mood and energy.’
Demystifying aphrodisiac foods
In relation to foods considered aphrodisiacs, Folch emphasizes that many of them are myths. ‘For example, bananas can provide energy because of their sugar content, but there is no evidence that certain foods have aphrodisiac effects. Seafood, often mentioned in this context, is nothing more than a legend,’ he says.
Final thoughts on nutrition
Dr. Folch emphasizes the importance of a balanced and varied diet, where moderation is key. ‘It is vital to consume foods rich in vitamins and minerals, as well as maintain a good combination of proteins, whether of animal or vegetable origin. For example, a combination of rice and legumes can provide all the amino acids needed by the body’, he concludes.
