Onil approaches a new edition of the Moors and Christians Festivities, an event that will run from April 22 to May 4. This celebration, which includes a rich program of activities, seeks to honor the Virgin of Health, with a mixture of history and devotion.
The night of the bonfires: a memory of overcoming
The festival will begin with the symbolic night of the bonfires, a ritual that recalls the overcoming of a plague epidemic that ravaged the village. The mayor, Jaume Berenguer, has shared that this tradition goes back to more than three centuries, when neighbors were urged to burn the assets affected by the disease, thus marking the beginning of his recovery.
The power of fire in the local tradition
Every April 22, at 10pm, the flames illuminate the streets of Onil, creating a magical atmosphere that symbolizes the renewal and unity of the people. The inhabitants gather around the bonfires, thus strengthening the community ties.
The Virgin of Health: A trip to the chapel
The celebration continues with the transfer of the image of Our Lady of Health since its hermitage, a moment that marks the beginning of the festivals. Over the following days, neighbors are preparing to participate in novenos, traditional dances and concerts, as well as in exciting ball games.
Four days of partying: entrance and guerrillas
On May 1st, Onil will be launched with the entrance, an event that opens the four most anticipated days of the party. The guerrillas, one of the culminating moments, will alternate with the embassies, which are recognized as one of the oldest traditions in the Valencian Community.
Parades and acts that captivate
On May 3, the community will enjoy a parade where the comparsas will show their pride and their creativity, highlighting the crescent side, which will open the way to the festivals.

Mayor Berenguer acknowledged the importance of the Association of Comparses in the organization of these holidays, inviting everyone to visit Onil to live the unique experience of their parties.
