The return of an iconic leader
Oriol Junqueras, after his departure as president of Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) three months ago, is ready to step forward again. With the intention of resuming his leadership of the party, Junqueras will make his official announcement on September 21 at an event open to the public at the Teatre de la Passió in Olesa de Montserrat, accompanied by key figures from his team such as Raül Romeva and Diana Riba.
A tour of Catalonia
Since his resignation on June 10, Junqueras has been in constant contact with ERC members, visiting various Catalan towns. His first stop was in Sant Vicenç dels Horts, where an important meeting was held that marked the beginning of a series of events aimed at listening to the concerns of the membership. Through his social networks, Junqueras has shared these moments, underlining his commitment to the party.
A future focused on renewal
Junqueras’ candidacy is presented as a proposal for ‘renewal’ within ERC. In a statement, it is highlighted that the event in Olesa de Montserrat will serve to present the fundamental lines of this initiative, which has been shaped by months of dialogue and active listening between the party members. However, within ERC, there is also a faction that demands a generational change, asking Junqueras to give way to new voices.
Voices of support for the candidacy
In addition to the names already mentioned, the event will feature the participation of other prominent activists. Deputy Ana Balera, former councillor Bernat Solé, senator Laura Castel and mayor Marc Puigtió, among others, will join Junqueras to express their support. Recently, some members of the party asked the ERC Guarantees Commission to review the date of the national congress, scheduled for 30 November, in relation to the party statutes.
Reflections on the future of the party
As ERC prepares for this important congress, Junqueras stands as a symbol of continuity and change. His return could represent not only the recovery of a familiar leadership, but also the possibility of an internal restructuring that allows the party to adapt to new political times. In a constantly evolving landscape, ERC’s ability to innovate and attract new generations will be crucial to its future relevance.
