Perception of the situation in Spain and its autonomous communities

Variation in the perception of the situation in Spain

According to a study carried out by the IO Research Institute, the perception of the situation in Spain varies significantly between its different autonomous communities. While the general assessment of Spaniards about their country indicates that Spain is worse, there are differences in citizens’ opinions depending on their place of origin.

The director of IO Research Studies, David Martín de la Morena, pointed out that the autonomous communities that, to a greater extent, believe that the country is better compared to a year ago are the Basque Country, Navarra and Andalusia, while the inhabitants who Those from Extremadura, Cantabria and Rioja think that the country is worse.

Differences in perception at the national and regional level

The perception of both Spain and each autonomous community varies considerably depending on their inhabitants. The communities with the greatest difference between their positive assessment of Spain compared to a year ago and their positive assessment of their region are La Rioja, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands.

In contrast, those communities that value the situation in Spain better than the situation in their region compared to a year ago are Cantabria, Castilla y León and Galicia.

Perception of improvement in the autonomous communities

Almost half of Spaniards consider that their region of residence is in the same situation, compared to a year ago; compared to a smaller percentage who think it is worse. Only a small percentage of Spaniards think that their community is better than a year ago.

The autonomous communities that believe, to a greater extent, that their autonomy is better compared to a year ago are La Rioja and the Valencian Community, followed by Navarra, Madrid, Andalusia and the Balearic Islands.

The study also analyzed the management carried out by regional governments on various specific matters and the assessment that Spaniards make of them. The autonomous subjects most valued by Spaniards refer to tourism, cleanliness, the defense of freedoms and security.

In contrast, what Spaniards value the worst is the regional management of medical waiting lists, the fight against corruption, immigration and health.

The Spaniards consider that the best tourism policies are carried out in the Canary Islands, Andalusia, Madrid, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands; while in the case of cleaning, the Basque Country, Madrid, Asturias, Cantabria and Navarra stand out.

Regarding the defense of freedoms, Spaniards consider that it is best carried out in Madrid, the Basque Country, Catalonia, Asturias and Navarra; while in the case of security, Madrid, the Basque Country, Asturias, Navarra and Galicia stand out.
