Plataforma Canal Viu seeks to recover Clot de la Lacuna

Recovery of a Natural Space

Canal Viu, a platform committed to environmental conservation, has proposed to recover the Clot de la Llacuna, an endorheic lake of approximately one hectare located in the municipality of Linyola (Pla d’Urgell). This space, which used to house a varied birdlife, was drained in 1981 to make way for farmland.

The proponents of this initiative argue that the recovery of the Clot de la Llacuna would be a complement to the biodiversity of the Plana d’Urgell, attracting species of waders that are not currently found in the Ivars i Vila-sana pond, such as the wader, the avocet or the sandpiper. This proposal is part of an awareness campaign that begins on June 1, along with the collection of signatures to support this noble cause.

Characteristics of Clot de la Lacuna

The Clot de la Llacuna, located near Linyola in the direction of Poal, was the second largest pond in the Plana d’Urgell after the Ivars i Vila-sana pond. With an area of approximately one hectare, this shallow, endorheic lake favored the presence of wading birds, known for their stretched legs and long beaks, feeding mainly on worms and other organisms that live in the mud.

Over time, attempts were made to drain this space, culminating in its total disappearance in 1981 to make way for farmland. Despite this, the Canal Viu platform seeks to revive this natural environment, taking as an example the successful recovery of the Ivars i Vila-sana pond in 2005.

Challenges and Perspectives

The recovery of Clot de la Llacuna poses challenges, but the platform emphasizes that, with the right will, this project would be feasible. It is highlighted that the management of this space could depend on the Ivars pond, which would enhance the conservation of biodiversity in the region.

The recovery initiative includes the acquisition of land and the removal of debris, actions that require the support of entities and individuals. In addition, it seeks to raise awareness about the importance of Clot de la Llacuna, given that a large part of the population is unaware of its history and ecological value.
