Promoting Environmental Awareness among European Youth

Celebration of two decades of regional impact

The Palau de Pedralbes in Barcelona was the scene of a memorable day this Thursday, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion. In this context, the conclusions of the Y4GreenERF project were presented, an initiative that has been developed between November 2023 and November 2024 with the support of the European Union.

A project for a sustainable future

Y4GreenERF is not just a project, but a platform designed to empower new generations in their environmental responsibility. The aim is to promote a social change that promotes sustainability and the care of the planet among young people, who become agents of change in their communities.

Youth awareness and responsibility

During the presentation, it was emphasized that young people in the Euroregion are increasingly informed about current environmental challenges. This awareness drives them to take an active role in improving social and environmental conditions in Europe.

Young people’s demands for real change

The voices of the more than 700 participants in the workshops have been clear: change in daily habits is essential to guarantee a better future. The proposals that have emerged include the creation of more sustainable infrastructure, such as bike lanes, swap shops and vertical gardens, as well as the promotion of responsible consumption and support for local commerce.

Specific actions in several municipalities

The project has been implemented in 18 municipalities of the Euroregion, where 22 initiatives financed with European funds have been presented. Cities such as Girona, Figueres, and Montpellier have hosted activities that have involved 716 young people in an active dialogue about the environment.

Interregional collaboration for greater impact

The coordination of the Y4GreenERF has been led by the AECT Euroregion Pirineus Mediterrània, with the involvement of institutions such as the University of Girona and various youth organizations. This joint effort ensures that young people’s voices are heard at European level.

Looking to the future

With the completion of the Y4GreenERF project, it is clear that youth empowerment in environmental matters is a path that must continue. Young people’s commitment to sustainability and their ability to influence European policies are fundamental for a greener tomorrow.
