Reading between the hermitages: a literary journey to the Ferrera Valley

A cultural initiative that transforms the environment

The project ‘Vall Ferrera reads’ has emerged as a lighthouse of culture and literature in the hermitages of the Ferrera Valley, promoted by the enthusiasm of the teacher and former mayor Joan Antoni Baron. This initiative seeks to promote reading into an exceptional natural setting, turning historical spaces into literary meeting points.

Origin of a singular idea

The inspiration for this project was born of a casual talk in Natura Llibres, a rural bookstore located in Alins, a small nucleus of eighty inhabitants. Its founder, Meritxell, transformed an old cows block into a dynamic space dedicated to literature, where cultural events are continuously held, from book presentations to reading clubs.

An inspirational walk

Every day, Meritxell walks to the Romanesque chapel of Sant Quiri, a place he considers ideal for reading. Despite his concerns about the availability of books, his vision found support in Llibre Viu, an entity in Mataró dedicated to literary exchange, which enthusiastically responded to his proposal.

A growth that crosses borders

Although the initiative began in the Ferrera Valley, it has expanded to the Vall d’Àneu i Cardós. Users’ comments are very positive, with many residents expressing their satisfaction with access to reading, an element that was not available before. The popularity of books in these chapels is evident when they find them messy, a sign that visitors use and enjoy them.

Revalue the patrimoni through literature

This proposal not only encourages reading, but also revalues historical heritage. The hermitages, located in spectacular landscapes, offer a quiet environment where silence is combined with natural beauty. Thus, visitors can enjoy a unique experience that unites nature, history and literature.

Readings for all tastes

The repertoire of books available mainly includes poetry and short narratives, ideal for reading times in the chapel. Over time, novels and other genres have been added thanks to the contributions of readers, creating a diverse and attractive literary space.

A space for reflection and creativity

The combination of literature with the natural environment of hermitages offers readers a moment of peace and reflection, a luxury that is often lost in their daily routine. The project ‘Vall Ferrera reads’ is an example of how the passion for reading can revitalize communities and preserve cultural heritage.
