Receiving the impact of the flood: the resilience of the Muixerangues of Algemesí

A municipality marked by the tragedy

Algemesí, one of the most emblematic nuclei of the muixeranguera tradition, suffered serious consequences due to the flood of October 29. With a height of up to 1.70 meters, the floods affected not only the homes, but also vehicles and crops, leaving a devastating balance that included the loss of four lives.

Reactivation of muixerangueres gangs

With the aim of recovering from the impact of the catastrophe, the gangs of Muixerangues of Algemesí, known as the blue and the green, have rehearsed again. Despite the adverse circumstances, with the new losing their premises, both groups remain firm in their dedication to tradition.

Solidarity in difficult times

The Muixeranga d’Algemesí started its season with a special rehearsal, followed by exhibitions in Paiporta and Cataroja, two of the towns most affected by the flood, with a strong number of victims. This decision was a gesture of support and unity with the communities that are still struggling to recover.

A fundamental role in the community

In recent months, the Muixeranga has become a pillar of social support, organizing funding collections and distributing help to those affected. Recently, it was able to raise 4,500 euros to help neighbors one of the most damaged streets, adding a total of 150,000 euros in donations.

Return to normal

After the flood, the Muixeranga of Algemesí managed to restore its headquarters in just two days, despite the loss of some teams and memories. In contrast, the New Muixeranga has been forced to look for a new rehearsal space, adapting to the circumstances in a gym, where its activity continues with limitations.

Commitment to the future

With the horizon put in the meeting of muixerangues and castles scheduled for June 14, both groups are preparing to continue their actions. The Muixeranga of Algemesí will be presented to Onil at a solidarity event, while the new will receive invitations to other important events.

Reflections on Resilience

The president of the new, Raül Sanxis, emphasizes that the need to move on has helped to maintain the spirit of the gang, despite the losses. His recent participation in a rally in Valencia to ask for responsibilities in the management of the flood reflects his commitment to the community and his desire to make his voice heard.

Road to recovery

With government aid beginning to arrive, the population of Algemesí continues to work to restore normality. Despite the pain that persists in the community, strength and solidarity of its inhabitants, they remain as a testament to their ability to overcome.
