Measures for safer traffic

With the aim of guaranteeing safer traffic in Girona, the Municipal Police has intensified traffic controls in the city. This decision responds to the increase in accidents with victims recorded between 2022 and 2023, a growth that has worried local authorities.

Aware of the importance of reducing accidents, it has been decided to triple the number of controls with mobile radars compared to the previous year. Thus, the forecast is established to carry out around 135 controls during the current year, compared to the 45 carried out last year.

To carry out these surveillance and control tasks, the motorists’ unit, responsible for monitoring the roads and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations, has been reinforced with two more agents.

Identifying the critical points

Studies by the Municipal Police have made it possible to identify the most critical points in the city, where the majority of traffic accidents are concentrated. These points, especially the expressways, will be prioritized in speed controls.

During the past year, the streets that recorded the most accidents were the avenue of Josep Tarradellas and Joan, the passeig d’Olot, the street of Santa Eugènia, the street of Emili Grahit and the street of Barcelona. Likewise, the most problematic intersections were the Fontajau roundabout and the Passeig d’Olot roundabout.

Alarming data

In 2023, Girona registered a total of 1,430 traffic accidents, of which 408 involved victims. This represents an increase of 2.8% compared to the previous year. Regarding the number of victims, 444 were counted, with an increase of 3.5% compared to 2022.

The vehicles most frequently involved in these accidents were cars, followed by motorbikes, electric scooters, bicycles, trucks or vans, mopeds and buses.

Main causes of accidents

Incorrect maneuvers, lack of respect for the safety distance and distraction were the main causes of traffic accidents in Girona. These factors, often related to excessive speed, put the safety of drivers and pedestrians at risk.

The times and days with the most accidents coincide with the times of greatest traffic, particularly from Monday to Thursday during the central hours of the day.
