Ramon Giné is preparing to close a significant chapter in his career as an artistic director of the Igualada exhibition, an event dedicated to the performing arts for children and young people. In its last edition, Giné has decided not to choose the renewal of his post, marking an end that leads with a deep reflection on the path traveled.
Inequality in institutional support
In a recent conversation with ACN, Giné expressed concern about the difference in support of events such as the show compared to other cultural fairs, such as the FiraTàrrega. According to him, the lack of more robust funding has put the event in a precarious situation.
An ambitious budget proposal
Giné points out that in order to achieve real and sustainable growth, the sample budget should range from 700,000 to 800,000 euros, a figure that contrasts with the current 450,000 euros available. This discrepancy affects not only the team that currently operates as freelancers, but also the companies that act, who often do not receive the proper compensation.
A festival for all
One of Giné’s goals has been to break the labels that often limit the sample audience. With a more inclusive view, he believes that shows should be accessible to all age groups, comparing it to cinema, where age restrictions do not prevent adults from enjoying films for a young audience.
A success in terms of participation
The 36th edition of the exhibition has been a success in terms of proposals, with 41 shows selected from more than a thousand submissions. Giné emphasizes that this growth in inscriptions indicates a highlight for Catalan children’s and youth theater, as well as the importance that companies give to participate in this festival.
The phenomen of ‘festivalitis’
Giné has observed a rise in the creation of festivals in Catalonia, a phenomenon he calls ‘Festivalitis’. Although he acknowledges that this may be positive, he also warns that stable programs should not be damaged, which are essential for the development of culture in the country.
The need for diversity in programming
He considers it essential for programmers to dare to incorporate new voices and formats in their offers, beyond the most popular titles. This diversity will not only enrich the cultural offer, but also guarantee the long -term sustainability of festivals.
