Regulations about the breeding of self-consumption in Catalonia

Regulation of bird breeding by self -consumption

In Catalonia, the regulations governing bird breeding for family self -consumption are based on Decree 40/2014, approved on March 25. This legislation specifies the conditions for the possession of a limited number of corral birds, guaranteeing their health and food safety of the products obtained.

Restrictions in the dyeing of birds

According to the regulations, people who choose to breed birds at home cannot have more than 30 laying hens for family consumption or over 50 chickens. In addition, it is imperative to acquire these animals in establishments that are registered in the irrigation (registration of livestock farms).

Registration process for self -consumption farms

The Register of Livestock Operations in Catalonia requires a communication procedure, which can be carried out through the Livestock Telematic Management System (GTR) or in person at the corresponding regional office. Self -consumption farms do not need specific authorization, as no commercial livestock activities are not considered.

Biosafety and hygiene measures

In order to prevent diseases, such as bird influence, it is essential that self -consumption farms implement rigorous biosafety measures. This includes protecting birds from contact with wild species, preventing them from accessing sources of water and food, and ensuring that the water supplied is safe.

Protocols d’higiene

The facilities where the birds are raised must be regularly cleaned and disinfected, with proper control of waste and dead birds to minimize health risks.

Sanctions for breach

Failure to comply with regulations can lead to sanctions. State Law 8/2003 of Animal Health provides for fines ranging from 600 to 3,000 euros for not registered. However, Catalonia applies a protocol that allows a warning before imposing sanctions, thus giving the opportunity to regularize the situation.

Current state of poultry farms in Catalonia

Currently, Catalonia has 4,812 registered farms of birds of self -consumption, with 3,467 dedicated to laying chickens and 1,342 to meat chickens. In addition, there are 176 small -capacity farms, most of which have laying hens.

State regulations on self -consumption

Royal Decree 637/2021, recently approved, establishes the obligations for self-consumption farms at the state level, aligning with Catalan regulations, which had already established the necessary requirements for these facilities.
