Reimagining Energy Distribution: Towards a Public and Sustainable Future

The Importance of Energy in Our Daily Life

Energy is an essential element that powers our lives, providing light, heating and powering all our devices. However, behind this basic need is a complex system that is full of controversies and hidden interests.

An Energy Transition in Debate

The transition to renewable energy sources represents one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Despite good intentions, the debate has degenerated into a struggle between economic interests, environmental preservation and the need for a sustainable future. In this context, environmental organizations and local communities have criticized energy transition models that prioritize technical and economic aspects, leaving aside social and environmental issues.

An Electrical Network in the Hands of a Few

In Spain, most of the electricity distribution networks are concentrated in the hands of an oligopoly, with E-distribución controlling 98% of the network in Catalonia. This situation contrasts with other countries where the infrastructure is managed by public companies or through private concessions.

The Impact of Privatization

The privatization of the electricity grid, which began in the 1980s and 1990s, was promoted by the European Union with the aim of creating a more competitive market. However, this process has ended up reinforcing the power of large companies, which dominate the sector and have created a ‘natural monopoly’ that limits real competition.

The Need for a Management Change

The Network for Energy Sovereignty has been working to recover public management of electricity distribution. Through legal studies and community initiatives, it seeks to demonstrate that current management is deficient and that public administrations should consider expropriation to restore public control.

Collaboration and Proposals for the Future

Recently, a Decalogue of proposals for public and sustainable energy in Catalonia has been presented, which includes the creation of a working group between the Generalitat and the State to review current regulations. The Directorate General of Energy should receive the necessary resources to assess the state of the network and propose appropriate investments.

Towards Energy Sovereignty

The Generalitat de Catalunya has the capacity to guarantee the good condition of the distribution networks and demand responsibilities from companies. If Energética, the public energy company, were to assume management of the network, it could contribute significantly to a fairer and more accessible distribution model.

The energy transition is not only an opportunity to change the production model, but also to achieve energy sovereignty that guarantees access to energy as a fundamental right, moving away from speculation and the control of a few .
