Reinvent the Future: Youth and Barcelona Ateneo

A decisive time for Catalonia

The current political situation in Catalonia leads us to a deep reflection on the need to create a sense of belonging. This idea of ’making country’, which was once inspired and united, is now seen with a certain resignation, especially among youth. The younger generation faces the challenge of assigning a new meaning to this expression, in a context where the words ‘rethinking’ and ‘re -articulation’ resonate but without a clear action.

The challenge of the Barcelona Ateneo

One of the emblematic spaces that this struggle represents is the Ateneu Barcelonès. Its Board of Directors is preparing for elections that, despite its historical importance, seem to go unnoticed. The institution, which has been a lighthouse of culture and knowledge, struggles to regain its prominence at a time when its social relevance is questioned.

Candidatures i Perspectives

The main candidates, Isona Passola and Jordi Casassas, represent two visions for the future. While Passola seeks to continue his mandate, Casassas brings a historical perspective. Both agree on the need to revitalize the Athenaeum, but their programs do not seem to promise a radical change.

An evolutionary community

Despite the lack of tangible renewal, a ferment of new ideas is observed in the Ateneo. In recent conversations with members of the institution, the importance of building a community is emphasized. Networking, often misinterpreted, can be a catalyst for young people and adults interaction, creating links that go beyond the Ateneo’s physical space.

A generation looking for space

With only 11.6% of members under the age of 28, the Ateneo faces the challenge of connecting with new generations. However, young people led sections show renewed potential. Recently scheduled events reflect a significant change in quality and quantity, driven by equipment with energy and creativity.

Continental Coffee: a space for youth

One of the most successful initiatives is Continental Café, which brings together young people to participate in conversations that go beyond superficiality. However, the tendency to classify activities exclusively for young people may be limiting. It is essential for these spaces not only to be seen as platforms for socialization, but also as gates of entry to a wider world.

Reflections on the future

The reality of youth politics is that many young people are far from traditional structures. As they seek alternative paths, community initiatives and social media emerge as new forms of interaction. The key to the revitalization of the Ateneo and other similar spaces lies in the ability to think and work as a whole, overcoming the apathy and the inevitable discouragement that it has marked in recent years.
