A historical concert at the Cathedral of Tortosa

On April 5, 2025, the Cathedral of Tortosa became the scene of an exceptional musical event with the interpretation of the Oratory ‘The Return of the Hijo Prodigo’ by Carles Baguer, a Catalan composer of the classicism who was rediscovered thanks to the collective effort of performers and institutions.

The legacy of Carles Baguer

Baguer, who lived between 1768 and 1808, is recognized as one of the greatest composers of his time. Although his work ‘The return of the Prodigo’ was not released until 1814, seven years after his death, his music has shone again in the last concerts held in Catalonia.

A musical rescue

The work to recover this work has been directed by Lluís Bertran, with the collaboration of renowned music teachers. This critical edition has allowed the Choir Francesc Valls and the Evening of Arnadí, under the direction of Dani Espasa, to give life to the score in a way that resonates with its originality.

An exceptional interpretation

The quality of the interpretation was key to the rescue of this work. With a cast of soloists who included prominent names such as David Alegret and Mireia Tarragó, the concert was a true musical festival. Alegret, with his impeccable technique, shone in the role of the father, while Padullés and Albrich brought a unique emotional intensity to his characters.

Key moments of the concert

Among the most memorable moments is the duet between father and son, who captivated the audience with his tenderness and harmony. The end, with all the soloists and the heart in a lush climax, left an indelible imprint on the attendees.

A new age for Catalan music

With the 20th anniversary of Arnadí evenings, his performance is still a reference in ancient music. The exceptional performance of the musicians, together with the vision of Dani Espasa, emphasizes the importance of preserving and disseminating Catalan musical heritage.

A brilliant future

The recovery of works such as’ The Return of the Prodigo ” not only revitalizes Catalan classical music, but also opens the door to future explorations and interpretations that celebrate the richness of our cultural heritage.
