Temporary closure of the Gabriel García Márquez Library
The Gabriel García Márquez Library, famous for being considered the best in the world, will begin a period of closure from July 29 to August 18. Despite this, the improvement works are expected to last until October, minimally affecting the service for visitors. This announcement has been communicated by Barcelona City Council as part of a project to improve and renovate various library facilities throughout the city.
Strategic Improvements in Public Spaces
Located in the district of Sant Martí, the library will carry out major installation works of support structures that will be integrated within the existing architectural design. In addition, new spaces will be built outside, such as an umbracle in Plaça Carmen Balcells, designed to host community activities and exhibitions, to encourage interaction with neighbors.
Alternative Libraries in Operation
During the closure of the García Márquez library, users will be able to continue enjoying other nearby facilities, such as the Poblenou – Manuel Arranz and Ramon d’Alós-Moner Libraries in the Besòs and Maresme neighborhoods, which will remain operational throughout August
Renovation of the Xavier Benguerel Library
Closer by, the Xavier Benguerel Library in Vila Olímpica is also preparing for a comprehensive renovation during the autumn. This space, open since 1995, will need updates in its facilities and the remodeling of the space that houses the Children’s and Youth Literature Documentation Service, which is one of the most relevant in the city.
Interventions in Other Libraries
Other libraries in Barcelona do not escape the improvements. The Ignasi Iglésias – Can Fabra Library will close at the end of September to update the air conditioning system. For its part, the Guinardó – Mercè Rodoreda Library will tackle renovation work in various technical aspects during the autumn.
Innovation Project at El Carmel Library
The El Carmel Library – Juan Marsé will dedicate itself to transforming one of its children’s areas into a STEAM innovation space. This initiative, in collaboration with the Neighborhood Plan, aims to integrate educational projects on health, science and technology.
Constant Improvements for the Future
As the Sant Antoni – Joan Oliver Library progresses in the reforms planned until the first quarter of 2025, other libraries are also receiving corrective and preventive improvements that will ensure adequate maintenance and the acquisition of new furniture. This reflects the City Council’s effort to ensure that library services are adapted to the modern needs of citizens.
