Salvador Illa begins his period as president: a new era for Catalonia

A beginning full of unknowns

The investiture session of Salvador Illa, the new leader of the PSC, has started with an atmosphere full of uncertainty. The presence of the president-in-exile, Carles Puigdemont, in the Parliament of Catalonia has generated anticipation, with his unknown location just after the welcome ceremony. Josep Rull, president of the Parliament, opened the plenary session at 10:00 a.m., pointing out that both the first vice-president David Pérez and the deputy Lluís Puig have delegated their vote for health reasons. However, Puigdemont has not followed this path.

A clear and committed message

With the support of the Republican Left and the Commons, Illa has set out his government plan in a speech that stands out for its ambition. He expressed his gratitude to the negotiating teams that facilitated his candidacy and emphasized that the agreements reached are for the investiture, not for the legislature. In addition, he recognized the work of the acting president, Pere Aragonès, and affirmed that Catalonia is in a better situation than at the beginning of the legislature.

An urgent Amnesty Law

During his speech, Illa called for a quick and effective implementation of the Amnesty Law, stressing the need to restore the political rights of all Catalan citizens. He has expressed his respect for the separation of powers, while asking the judiciary to respect the will expressed by the legislature to move towards full normalization in Catalonia.

A united and inclusive Catalonia

The new president has expressed his intention to work for the unification of Catalans, stressing that the time has come to rebuild a sense of community among all citizens. Illa has emphasized the importance of focusing public policies on the well-being of society, regardless of ideological differences.

A new transformation underway

Illa has expressed his desire to start the ‘third great transformation’ of Catalonia, after the governments of Jordi Pujol and the contributions of Pasqual Maragall and José Montilla. He has made it clear that he will seek to collaborate with other political formations, with the Republican Left and the Commons as priority allies. ‘I come to build, not to destroy’, he stated forcefully.

The development of the plenum

After his initial intervention, Rull has decided to suspend the session for an hour so that the parliamentary groups can prepare their responses. At 11:45, the session will resume with the interventions of the different groups, starting with Junts per Catalunya. Illa will have the opportunity to respond individually or jointly, which could significantly extend the length of the hearing, which is expected to last seven to eight hours.

Security in Parliament

The investiture session is held in an environment of maximum security in the Parc de la Ciutadella, with the Mossos d’Esquadra controlling access to ensure the smooth development of the event.
