Reactions from the Popular Party after Sánchez’s statement
Pedro Sánchez’s recent statement has sparked an intense debate in the political arena. The Spanish Prime Minister stated that the return of immigrants who enter the country illegally is ‘essential’. This statement has not gone unnoticed, provoking a strong response from the Popular Party (PP).
Criticism from the PP and recognition of a change
Miguel Tellado, spokesman for the PP in Congress, welcomed this change of position, commenting that ‘Sanchez is right when he rectifies’. At a press conference in Vitoria, Tellado stressed that, although the president has changed his approach, this shows the lack of a clear migration plan on the part of the Government.
Demands for apologies and reflections on immigration policy
Tellado not only applauded the rectification, but also demanded an apology from those who disqualified the PP for proposing a more responsible immigration policy. ‘We do not expect that to happen, since it is not usual in their way of proceeding,’ he added, indicating that Sánchez’s current immigration policy is irresponsible.
The risks of an inconsistent immigration policy
The PP spokesman warned that the lack of border control could lead to tragedies at sea, blaming the president for encouraging illegal immigration and encouraging mafias. ‘If the government wants to discuss concrete solutions, we are willing to collaborate,’ concluded Tellado.
The reaction of other members of the PP
Other members of the PP also spoke out on the matter. Borja Sémper stressed that abrupt changes in immigration policy could have serious repercussions. ‘If someone from the PP had made comments like Sánchez’s, they would have been labelled xenophobic,’ he said in an interview.
Criticism from different fronts
Ester Muñoz, deputy secretary of health and education for the PP, criticised the inconsistency of the current administration, suggesting that its positions change from one day to the next without any apparent logic. Xavier García Albiol, mayor of Badalona, also joined in the criticism, recalling that the government recently disqualified his position on illegal immigration.
Sanchez’s message from Senegal
Speaking from Senegal, Sánchez argued that the return of illegal immigrants is crucial to sending a clear message to the mafias that traffic in human beings. He stressed that security in migration must be a priority and lamented the growth of criminal networks that operate in this area.
An uncertain future in migration policy
As political tensions rise and positions on immigration become more polarised, the future of migration policy in Spain remains uncertain. The need for a coherent and responsible approach is more crucial than ever.
