Sant Cugat City Council has developed the Climate Comfort Plan to help the city’s public schools deal with high temperatures and heat waves. This plan includes several measures to improve comfort conditions in educational centers.
Installation of air conditioning and ventilation
One of the most outstanding measures of the plan is the installation of air conditioning and ventilation in the classrooms. This will make it possible to maintain a pleasant temperature in the educational spaces, guaranteeing the comfort of students and teaching staff. In addition, pergolas will be placed in the courtyards to provide natural shade and more trees will be planted to improve ventilation and reduce the sensation of heat.
Collaboration with public schools
According to Cristina Paraira, Deputy Mayor of Climate Change, the City Council has taken into account the needs of public schools and has worked in collaboration with the management of the educational centers and the AFAs Coordinator to develop this plan. This has made it possible to identify the most urgent actions and prioritize them for implementation.
Budget item and implementation
The plan envisages allocating a sum of 620,000 euros for the first phase of implementation, which includes the installation of air conditioning units and fans in the classrooms most affected by the heat, the placement of pergolas in the courtyards and tree planting. These actions will be carried out during the summer so that they are operational for the next school year.
Other planned actions
Other actions planned in the plan include the installation of pergolas, tensioned sails and awnings in school yards to provide shade and improve thermal comfort. The concrete tracks will also be painted to eliminate the inconvenience caused by the reflection of the sun.
