The Opinion of the Balearic Cultural Work
The Obra Cultural Balearic has expressed its joy after learning the figures of a recent survey carried out among families with children who will start early childhood education in the Balearic Islands. In this survey, it is revealed that 78.5% of parents opt for Catalan as the main language of instruction. This data indicates strong support for our language and a clear tendency among families to preserve its use.
An Answer to Confusion
The organization has declared that families should not be fooled by the confusion that has arisen as a result of government policies in relation to language. According to Obra Cultural Balearic, a false problem has been created and families are not influenced by the noise generated by extreme right-wing groups who, motivated by hostility towards the Catalan language, seek to destabilize coexistence and social cohesion in the region
Demands on the Generalitat
The Balearic Cultural Work has reiterated its demand to the Government of the Balearic Islands, urging it to withdraw the linguistic segregation plan that affects primary education for the 2024-2025 school year. Likewise, the OCB requests that its implementation in secondary education for the 2025-2026 academic year be definitively waived. Another request includes that the funds budgeted for this plan be allocated to attend to the real needs of educational centers.
Arguing against the Segregation Plan
According to the declarations of the Obra Cultural Balearic, the linguistic segregation plan for primary level is considered illegal, which is why the OCB has decided to contest it before the courts. In addition, they claim that this plan has failed resoundingly, since only 3% of educational centers have shown interest in joining, and these are privately owned. They also emphasize that this policy did not appear in the electoral program of the Popular Party, which they consider a betrayal of their voters.
80% Family Support
The Obra Cultural Balear celebrates with enthusiasm that a high percentage of families, specifically 80%, have decided to choose Catalan as the language of early education for their children. This figure reflects a clear trend and a commitment to the language, despite the adversities it currently faces.
