Security inequalities: The need for urgent actions in Puigcerdà

An insufficient step towards improvement

The City Council of Puigcerdà has reported on the incorporation of four new agents into the Local Police Corps, a decision that apparently represents a breakthrough. However, a more attentive look at the situation reveals that reality is much more complex and worrying.

A discouraging comparison

In contrast to Puigcerdà, which currently has only 14 agents, Sitges, with a similar population and a similar tourist volume, has 75 police officers. This significant difference results in an alarming ratio of 1 agent per 1,255 inhabitants in Puigcerdà, while in Sitges the number is 1 agent per 387 inhabitants.

The challenge of citizen security

The City Council’s attempt to address this shortcoming is a gesture that deserves recognition, but it is insufficient. The incorporation of these four agents is merely an attempt to cover a deep wound. In addition, with the imminent retirement of three body members, the actual impact of this measure will be almost null.

The unmatched needs of the community

The situation is complicated when the particular needs of Puigcerdà are considered. With a regional institute and three schools, the demand for surveillance during the school entrance and exit times is high, requiring a minimum of four agents. This leaves the rest of the vulnerable population, without the protection required for loading and unloading areas or for unexpected emergencies.

Uncertain future for local police

The Deputy Mayor, Francesc Armengol, has stated that the extension of the police body will not be completed until after the summer of 2027. Each time passing without an effective solution increases the risks that Puigcerdà faces.

A necessary reflection

It is essential to ask why Puigcerdà does not even reach the minimum security ratio established by the regulations, as well as what are the motivations or obstacles that prevent an effective solution. While the City Council celebrates this small improvement, the citizens of Puigcerdà continue to wait for adequate protection. Security is not only a matter of resources, but a fundamental right that all the inhabitants of Cerdanya deserve to be assured.
