Spain and the situation of qualified immigrants

The situation of skilled immigrants in Spain

A joint investigation by El País with other media such as the Financial Times and Lighthouse Reports reveals that foreigners with university degrees are excluded from the Spanish labor market. The overqualification with regard to the job held climbs to 54% among immigrants, compared to 33% among those born in Spain. This situation is similar in other countries, but the data from Spain stand out: it is the third country with the most overqualified foreigners and the gap with locals is the fifth highest on the continent.

The consequences of overqualification

Overqualification affects not only immigrants in general, but also varies according to their origin. 57% of immigrants arriving from Africa, Asia and Latin America are overqualified, seven points more than those arriving from countries of the global north.

The economic and political situation in Spain

In addition to the issue of the overqualification of immigrants, other aspects stand out in Spain. The purchase of armaments has accelerated as a result of the war escalation, with an extraordinary expenditure of 1,129 million euros approved by the Council of Ministers to increase military capabilities. This has been taken in the midst of the conflict in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East.

The internal political situation

The presence of the Spanish president in the electoral campaign penalizes the Basque Socialists in favor of EH Bildu, as reported by La Razón. In addition, the leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, asks the PSOE to break with Bildu and undertake not to agree with them until they condemn the murders of ETA and collaborate in the clarification of other murders.

Economic forecasts and climate change

Although the Spanish economy leads the growth estimates in Europe for this year and next, there are worrying forecasts for the Spanish economy in the medium and long term as a result of climate change. The Potsdam Climate Impact Research Institute warns that the Spanish economy will be the most harmed in Europe by climate warming and its associated effects.
