by PREMIUM.CAT

An exceptional astronomical event

It has been 119 years since Spain experienced a total solar eclipse. This phenomenon, which causes the star king to be completely hidden by the Moon, turning day into night, is unique and memorable for those who have the opportunity to witness it. After years of waiting, Spain will have the opportunity to experience three consecutive great solar eclipses between 2026 and 2028.

Eclipse of August 2026

The first of these events will take place on August 12, 2026, in the late afternoon. It will be visible in a strip of 290 kilometers wide that will include cities such as A Coruña, Oviedo, Santander, Vitoria, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Madrid and Barcelona, despite being outside the zone of totality, will also experience an impressive spectacle.

What can you expect?

Observers will see the Moon gradually overlap the Sun, creating a unique visual experience. The total eclipse will last more than a minute, after which the sun will gradually reappear.

The second total eclipse, in 2027

The following year, in 2027, the second total eclipse will be visible on August 2, also in the evening. The band of totality will be reduced, especially in the south of the Peninsula, but Seville, Granada, Ceuta and Melilla will have the opportunity to enjoy the show in its entirety.

Weather conditions

It is hoped that the good weather will allow the perfect observation of the phenomenon, although it will be necessary to be attentive to the weather conditions.

The 2028 Annular Eclipse

On January 26, 2028, an annular solar eclipse will be visible from several parts of the national territory. This phenomenon, different from the total eclipse, will show a ring of sun around the Moon, and will be visible from Ibiza to Andalusia.

Important precautions

Experts remind the importance of using proper eye protection to observe the solar eclipse safely. Direct observation of the sun without proper safety measures can cause irreversible eye damage.
