The Tour de France begins its 111th edition

The Tour de France is ready to begin its 111th edition, with the first stage taking place today, June 29. This stage will mark the start of the competition and will distribute the first yellow jersey of 2024. The cyclists will face a route of 206 kilometers and 3,700 meters of elevation gain through the Apennines, with a temperature expected to reach 35 degrees during big part of the day.

A challenging and mountainous route

Today’s stage will take cyclists from Florence to Rimini, crossing the Apennines. The profile of the stage presents a series of second and third category mountainous difficulties, including the San Marino Hill, which is 26 kilometers from the finish. This 7.1 kilometer climb with a gradient of 4.8% will be a challenge for cyclists after having overcome three other climbs in the last 50 kilometres.

Extreme weather conditions

In addition to the mountainous terrain, cyclists will also have to deal with high temperatures. The thermometer is expected to reach 35 degrees for much of the day, which will undoubtedly affect the development of the stage. During the stage, cyclists will face several mountainous difficulties, including the Col de Valico Tre Faggi, the Cota di Forche, the Cota di Carnaio, the Cota di Barbotto, the Cota di San Leo, the Cota di Montemaggio and the Cota de San Marino.
