Warning for rain and wind

Meteocat has issued a new alert for rain in central Catalonia. The alert will be in effect from 12 noon until 6 pm.

Effects of the storm

Tonight’s storm has caused damage to Berguedà, one of the central regions of Catalonia. Winds have reached speeds of up to 60 km/h and fallen trees have been reported.

During the peak of the storm, between 2/4 of 1 and 2/4 of 3 in the morning, wind gusts of up to 61 km/h were recorded at the Berga weather station and 57.6 km/h in the Sanctuary of Queralt.

These figures are the second highest recorded in the network of stations of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, surpassed only by a wind gust of 80.6 km/h in Portbou.

Emergency services

The emergency services have made a total of 24 wind-related departures in Catalonia from 10 pm yesterday until 9 am today. Three of these departures have taken place in central Catalonia.

The strong winds have caused trees to fall, as in Gironella, where the town’s mayor, David Font, has reported problems on public roads caused by the storm. The municipal brigades are working to gradually restore normality.

In addition to the fall of trees, the storm has caused damage to public lighting and torn awnings from the playgrounds of primary schools. There have also been falls of stones, mud and earth in streets near areas with drainage problems.

Incidents in other localities

In Sagas, the Fire Department intervened to remove branches from a tree that fell on the C-25.

As for precipitation, 9 liters/m2 have accumulated in Berga until 7.30 am. In Manresa, the rainfall was 2 litres/m2 and in Igualada it only rained 0.5 mm during the night.

weather forecast

According to Meteocat, it is expected to continue raining today. Civil Protection has activated the flood alert in the Ebro river basin. Storms with intense precipitation and strong wind gusts are expected in central Catalonia.

Temperatures are expected to drop, with highs around 25 degrees and lows around 15 degrees.
