Support for Language Day and the Manifesto ‘For Inclusion, Equal Opportunities and Non-Segregation’

The Department of Catalan Philology and General Linguistics of the University of the Balearic Islands has expressed its support for Language Day on May 5 and the manifesto ‘For inclusion, equal opportunities and non-segregation’ , promoted by the Teachers’ Assembly. This show of support arises as a response to the publication in the BOIB of the Resolution that officializes segregation, discrimination and arbitrariness through the Free Language Choice Pilot Plan approved unilaterally by the Government’s Ministry of Education.

Content of the Manifesto

The manifesto highlights the incompatibility of a plan that does not start from sociolinguistic reality and that seeks the separation of the group-class for reasons of language. In addition, it highlights that current laws do not allow separation into different centers and class-groups for reasons of language. He also criticizes the allocation of substantial financial items to the centers that adhere to the Pilot Plan, considering that these could be used to improve other priority educational areas such as infrastructure, reducing ratios, bureaucracy and attention to diversity.

Conclusion

This position of the Department of Catalan Philology and General Linguistics of the UIB reflects its concern for the current situation and its defense of equal opportunities and non-segregation in the educational field, reaffirming the importance of considering the sociolinguistic reality in language policies.
