The Port of Tarragona has closed 2024 with a notable increase in its cruise activity, recording 63 calls and a total of 136,850 passengers, a significant improvement compared to the 57 calls and 115,209 passengers of the previous year. This figure not only represents an increase of 19%, but also exceeds the pre-pandemic data, setting a new record.

Prospects for the Future

With the aim of attracting high-end and luxury cruises by 2025, the total number of calls is expected to increase. Visitors have mainly arrived from Spain, Italy, France and the United States, with a base of operations that will continue to be managed by MSC Cruises.

Cruise Passenger Activities and Preferences

According to surveys, a large majority (87%) of passengers choose to explore Tarragona on their own, while 6% participate in organized excursions. Visits to the city, Port Aventura and Poblet are the most popular, revealing an interest in the cultural and leisure wealth of the region.

Positive Reviews

Cruise passengers rated their experience with a remarkable 8.8, and 64% would recommend Tarragona as a cruise destination. The new terminal received a score of 9.1, highlighting the positive impact of the improvements in infrastructure.

A Year Full of Innovations

2024 has been a key year, with the celebration of the 64th MedCruise General Assembly and the inauguration of the new terminal at Moll de Balears. In addition, the port has made progress in sustainability initiatives, with a significant reduction in waste and CO2 emissions during construction.

The Port of Tarragona has implemented measures to minimize environmental impact, including the electrification of docks planned for 2026. These actions underline a firm commitment to the environment, while seeking to make the port a sustainable cruise hub.

Plans per al 2025

Next year, 35 cruise ships are expected to arrive, with 19 of them visiting Tarragona for the first time. Local authorities are working to deseasonalize cruise tourism, with an eye on a longer and more varied season.
