Tarragona celebrates its co-patron with fervor and reflection

An act of devotion in the cathedral of Tarragona

The city of Tarragona has experienced a day of deep devotion with the celebration of Santa Tecla, its co-patron. The main ceremony took place in the majestic metropolitan cathedral, a setting that hosted a solemn ceremony presided over by the bishop of Girona, fra Octavi Vilà, with the collaboration of the archbishop of Tarragona, Joan Planellas.

The importance of Friar Octavi’s presence

At the start of the event, Archbishop Planellas expressed the joy of having Friar Octavi, a native of Tarragona who has evolved as a believer and spiritual leader. Its presence symbolizes the connection between the two cities and its role in the religious community.

A ritual loaded with symbolism

A significant moment was the transfer in procession of the relic of the arm of Saint Tecla from its side chapel to the high altar, where it was exposed during the service. The event was attended by prominent figures, including Mayor Rubén Viñuales and the new Director General of Religious Affairs of the Generalitat, Ramon Bassas.

Reflections on the figure of Santa Tecla

In his homily, Bishop Vilà highlighted the courageous qualities of Saint Tecla, described as ‘a daring woman’ by the renowned author Maria Aurèlia Capmany. Vilà raised a provocative question: What do Pau and Thecla teach us in the current context? His answer revolved around the idea of fidelity and the need to persevere in the face of adversity.

The fight for justice as a central message

The bishop insisted on the fact that the cause of the Gospel implies a commitment to justice that transcends dangers. His vision united believers and non-believers in the defense of a common ideal: the fight for justice. The image of Tecla’s arm became a symbol of support and guidance to the truth.

A celebration that unites communities

After the ceremony, the attendees took part in a popular procession that led to Plaça de la Font, where a display of popular culture took place with traditional castles. This festivity not only celebrates the figure of Saint Tecla, but also strengthens the bonds between the people of Tarragona, regardless of their beliefs.
