Tarragona promotes the regeneration of its coastal spaces

A new age by the beaches of Tarragona

The City Council of Tarragona has started an ambitious project to revitalize its coastal spaces, launching the tender for works for the renaturalization of beaches and other coastal areas. With an area that exceeds 45 square kilometers, this plan seeks to improve the morphology, ecosystem and aesthetics of the Tarragona coast.

Tarragona Greenbelt’26: An initiative with European funds

These actions are part of the project ‘Tarragona Greenbelt’26’, which seeks to transform and restore both the urban and peri -urban spaces of the Green Ring. Funded by the European Union Next Generation Funds, this plan has a total investment of 3,604,816.11 euros, with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the demographic challenge.

Objectives of the intervention

The executive project will deline the actions necessary to implement a Climate Change Adaptation Plan, as well as the recovery of the public domain of the Tarragona coast. The actions will be performed at various key locations, including Miracle Beach and Cala Capellans.

Specific performances on the beaches

The initiatives include the restoration of dunes and the integration of Mas Rosselló Park into the coastal system, as well as the eradication of invasive exotic species. Specifically, the elimination of these species on the beach of the Cossis and the Arrabassada, as well as the restoration of the dune ecosystems on the Llarga beach, is expected.

Commitment to social inclusion

The construction contract is reserved for special work centers that focus on the social and labor insertion of people with intellectual disabilities or mental health problems, thus encouraging the responsible use of resources and social inclusion.

A sustainable future

With a four -month execution period, the amount of the tender amounts to 404,180.72 euros (VAT included). These actions mark the beginning of a new approach to the sustainability and resilience of the Tarragona beaches, preparing them to face the future challenges of the increasingly frequent maritime storms.

Guillermo García de Castro, Minister of the Environment of Tarragona, emphasized that these actions are a crucial step for the preservation and improvement of urban beaches, emphasizing the importance of renaturalization for resilience in the face of climatic changes.
