An impending winter warning
Meteorologist Roberto Brasero has issued a stark warning about the imminent arrival of a cold wave that will transform the weather landscape during the December Bank Holiday. According to his forecasts, starting Sunday, temperatures will drop drastically, accompanied by significant snowfall in the northern regions.
The impact of the Fred on the peninsula
Brasero highlighted that this drop in temperature will last for several days, with a climate reminiscent of winter. ‘We can expect this cold weather to persist until mid-week,’ he added, referring to what would be the first cold wave of the season.
Rising temperatures before the change
Despite the cold weather forecast, temperatures will continue to rise in many parts of Spain on Thursday, with a stable environment. The sun will dominate much of the territory, except in Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea, where there will be clouds and a chance of rain. In addition, the snow level in the Pyrenees will remain above 1500 meters.
The Constitution Bridge under a clear sky
Friday, Constitution Day, is expected to be an anticyclonic day, with clear skies in most of the country. Only Galicia and the north will experience some light rain, while the interior will see the formation of dense fog, especially in Extremadura.
The drastic change from Saturday
Saturday afternoon will mark a turning point, with the arrival of a polar air mass that will bring significant changes. Rain will be present in the north, with the snow level falling from 2000 to 1000 meters, while the rest of the country will enjoy warmer temperatures.
Forecasts for next week
On Sunday and Monday, arctic air will be felt, causing a notable drop in temperatures throughout the peninsula, with special attention to the Balearic Islands. Snowfall will spread across much of the north, with significant accumulations at altitudes between 500 and 800 meters.
Impact on large cities
Cities such as Burgos, León and Pamplona will see their maximum temperatures limited to just 5° C, while Madrid will not exceed 8° C. In contrast, the Canary Islands will maintain a warmer climate, with temperatures around 25° C.
Expectations of a prolonged winter
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has classified this phenomenon as ‘winter weather’, predicting that temperatures will continue to fall the following week, with possible night frosts in the interior. The snowfall could last until Wednesday or beyond, marking the start of what looks to be an intense winter.
