A worrying panorama: The deficit of green spaces

Barcelona faces an alarming lack of urban green areas, far below the recommendations of the World Health Organisation (WHO). According to these standards, the city should have between 10 and 15 square metres of green space per inhabitant, however, currently there is only less than 7 square metres available. This deficit is even more marked in the Eixample district, where each resident has less than 5 square metres at their disposal.

Impact of the construction of line L8 in the Eixample

In the midst of this green space crisis, works are underway to extend line L8 of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, which will connect Plaza España with Gràcia. This work, although necessary to improve transport, is raising concerns about the loss of vegetation in the Joan Miró park, where it is estimated that 94 trees will be affected, including 75 pines and 19 palm trees.

Monitoring and protection of green space

Faced with this situation, the Barcelona Ombudsman has decided to intervene, committing to supervising the works to ensure that no more green space is lost. The aim is to ensure that, when the work is finished, the felled trees are replaced and the affected spaces are restored.

Collaboration and communication: keys to the future

City councillor David Bondia has recommended the creation of a monitoring committee that includes various stakeholders, from local authorities to citizens. This committee would be essential to ensure fluid communication about the progress of the works and to resolve any issues that arise during the process.

Minimize the impact on the community

Although the City Council is not directly responsible for the construction, Bondia stresses the importance of minimising the inconvenience to residents. The works will affect the cycle lane and several public transport stops, which could have a considerable impact on mobility in the area.

A sustainable future for Barcelona

The current situation presents an opportunity to rethink Barcelona’s relationship with its green spaces. The Ombudsman has urged the City Council to prioritise the restoration of these spaces and to commit to maintaining existing parks and gardens in good condition to improve the quality of life of its citizens.

Role of the Ombudsman’s Office

The Barcelona Ombudsman, an independent body that protects citizens’ rights, plays a crucial role in this dynamic. Since its establishment, its mission has been to oversee the actions of the local government and ensure that the fundamental rights and freedoms of all Barcelonans are respected.
