The Catalan labor market: paradoxical growth in unemployment

Unexpected increase in unemployment in Catalonia

Recently, Catalonia has seen a notable increase in the number of unemployed people, with 2,317 new unemployed registered during July, representing an increase of 0.7% compared to the previous month. The total number of unemployed in the region rises to 327,283, according to data provided by the Ministry of Labour.

A job market that defies expectations

Despite this slight rise in unemployment figures, the employment outlook presents a positive side. In fact, the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration has reported a historic increase in workers, exceeding 3.83 million, with 3,362 new additions during July.

Promising year-on-year data

When comparing the data with the previous year, the situation becomes even more favorable. Unemployment has decreased by 4,073 people in one year, while memberships have increased by 3.4%, an increase equivalent to 126,267 new registrations.

Important differences with the rest of Spain

At the state level, the picture is divergent. Spain has recorded a significant decrease of 10,830 unemployed in July, while Catalonia leads the rise in unemployment, surpassing regions such as the Basque Country and Castilla y León, which have also experienced increases.

Catalonia facing state trends

Conversely, Andalusia has been a leader in the reduction of unemployment, with a notable decrease of 15,965 unemployed. This indicates that, despite the improvements in employment, Catalonia is experiencing a peculiar situation.

Hiring: a positive balance sheet despite unemployment

In terms of hiring, Catalonia registered 255,312 new contracts during July, with 105,712 of them being indefinite. This represents a year-on-year increase of 10,462 contracts, marking a growth of 4.27%.

Recruitment statistics in detail

Permanent contracts made up 41.4% of the total, while temporary contracts made up 58.6%. These data show remarkable contractual dynamism, all in a context of growth in unemployment.

Sectors on the rise: services lead the growth in unemployment

The service sector has been the most affected, with 2,256 people added to the unemployment ranks. Construction and industry have seen smaller increases, while the primary sector has recorded a decrease in unemployed.

Variation of unemployment by demarcations

Analyzing the different demarcations, Girona has experienced a slight drop in unemployment of 0.43%, unlike Barcelona, Tarragona and Lleida, where the percentages of increase have been significant. However, compared to the previous year, all these demarcations have shown improvements in negative percentages.

Reflections and future perspectives

As Catalonia navigates this duality in the labor market, between the increase in unemployment and the growth of memberships, it becomes clear that innovative strategies are required to address these complex dynamics. Labor and employment policies will play a vital role in the near future.
