On concert Messorable A La Berwald Holds
The Orfeó Català recently deflected the Swedish audience with a performance at the famous Berwaldhallen room in Stockholm. Directed by the prestigious British Daniel Harding, the Barcelona choir shared the stage with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, in front of more than 1,300 spectators. The interpretation of the monumental Symphony Resurrection of Mahler was the height of the evening, with the soprano Johanna Wallroth and the Mezzosoprano Avery Amereau contributing its exceptional voices.
The power of music and the ovation of the audience
The performance culminated in an apotheosis ovation that lasted more than five minutes, a testament to the emotional power of music and the connection between the choir and its audience. This experience comes after weeks of intense preparatory work under the direction of Pablo Larraz, with the collaboration of the guest director Simon Halsey, who ensured impeccable interpretation.
A musical legacy with Mahler
Resurrection Symphony occupies a special place in the history of the Orfeó Català, as it was the choir that premiered in Spain in 1910. Its musical complexity has been addressed on several occasions, with directors such as Kazushi Ono and Gustavo Dudamel at the helm, thus consolidating his masters in this monumental work that represents a vocal challenge for singers.
A work that explores life I the dead
Composed between 1888 and 1894, Mahler’s second symphony is a sound journey that reflects on the great questions of existence. Originally thought of as a symphonic poem, it evolved to incorporate various movements that culminate in a shocking coral end, offering a hopeful view of the resurrection.
Looking to the future
The choir is already preparing for new challenges, with an exciting project on the horizon for the 2025-26 season. The Catalan Orfeó will travel to Los Angeles, where he will debut under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, performing Beethoven’s solemn mass with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. The concerts will take place between February 20 and 22, 2026, marking a new chapter in its international career.
